This impressive sandstone villa in the heart of Giffnock suffered from a kitchen to the rear of the property squeezed between the end of the hall and the utility to the rear. With no connection to the garden the brief was simple – As large an open plan family space as possible.
In order to achieve this the existing back corner of the house was removed at ground floor and the footprint extended to the rear and side. The need for any internal columns supporting the existing first floor was designed out in conjunction with the engineer. The new columns are hidden within the external fabric of the extension allowing a column free multi use space. To the rear a 6.0m wide sliding aluminium door offers fantastic near level access to the garden. An additional side door was created for everyday access into a new utility rom which links to the existing hall and new shower room.
